INTERVIEW: THE NEW YORK TIMES ON HORROR

This month, Dr. Scahill was interviewed by the New York Times about the features of the horror film, in particular how we classify films within the genre. Is a film within the horror genre because it follows a certain plot structure, like the romantic comedy or the coming-of-age film? Is a horror film defined by its setting or iconography, like the western or film noir?

New York Times reporter Erik Piepenburg contacted Dr. Scahill to get his insight into how we categorize films, and to see how we might categorize recent films like The Humans and Spencer, which look and sound like horror films, but do not fit neatly within the traditional definition of the genre.
