SPECIAL EVENT: REVISITING BASIC INSTINCT
In 1992, Paul Verhoeven's Basic Instinct opened to protests by religious groups for its sex and violence, and by GLBT groups for its depiction of homosexual psychopaths. Right and Left shared the picket line as the resulting controversy helped make the film $352M worldwide. 26 years later, we'll take a look back at Basic Instinct for a critical re-assessment as part of Dr. Scahill's "Studies in Censorship" class. The Alamo Drafthouse Sloan Lake has generously donated their space for a special screening and Q&A about the film. We will be joined by the Assistant Director of Basic Instinct, Eric Jewett, now a professor in CU Denver's Communications department. In the post-film Q&A, Jewett will share his thoughts on the film's legacy, on working with Verhoeven and Sharon Stone, and how ACT UP would routinely come to the Basic Instinct set armed with whistles designed to disrupt the filming. "Basic B*tches" promises to be an engaging and provocative look at this landmark film in the ongoing culture wars over minority representation and media censorship.
